Supporting People:
Are you ready for the new regime?

Wednesday 13th March 2002  -  5.45pm to 9.00pm including supper
An evening seminar for Voluntary Board Members of London Housing Associations

In April of 2003 Supporting People will go live.

If your organisation provides any sheltered housing, supported housing or any form of floating support to residents, this will have a huge impact.  For, from then on, the way in which housing related support services are funded will be fundamentally different.

Housing Benefit will cease to fund the support services your organisation provides and Supported Housing Management Grant will no longer exist.  Instead, each local authority will receive a grant for co-ordinating and funding support services in their borough.  They will then be responsible for deciding what services are needed and who should deliver them.

If your organisation is to continue to receive funding to provide, or even expand, your support services, you will have to convince the local authority that your services are needed, wanted and offer good value for money.

Are you geared up for this change?

This seminar, designed for voluntary members of London housing associations, will:

  • examine what the Government hopes to achieve through the introduction of Supporting People
  • outline how the new regime is designed to work
  • look at how local authorities are approaching their new responsibilities
  • explore what the changes will mean for Londonís associations and how they will need to adapt to thrive in the new environment
JANE FOSTER
Supporting People Advisor, London Housing Federation

As a member of the Federation Supporting People team, Jane is involved in providing practical help for associations as they prepare for the new regime.  She will give an overview of the principles behind Supporting People and the implications for housing associations as well as providing an update on the latest policy developments.  Jane is particularly aware of the issues for voluntary members having been on the board of a small special needs association.

HELEN DUCKWORTH
Supported Housing Policy Manager, London Borough of Brent

Helen is leading on the implementation of Supporting People in Brent.  She will discuss the boroughís strategy, how they are involving housing associations and what they will expect from potential providers of support services.  Helen brings first hand experience of both sides of the commissioner/provider relationship as, before joining Brent early last year, she was a supported housing manager at Paddington Churches Housing Association.

CHRIS HAMPSON
Head of Policy, Strategy and Service Development, Look Ahead Housing and Care

Head of Policy, Strategy and Service Development, Look Ahead Housing and Care Chris will bring the service provider perspective to the table. Using Look Ahead as an example, he will discuss how organisations need to gear up internally to assess and minimise the risks, and maximise the opportunities presented by Supporting People.
