Visits to regeneration projects : 1.30pm on Monday 18th July 2005

Netherthorpe and Upperthorpe Community Alliance (NUCA)
  • Working to create sustainable renewal for the Netherthorpe, Upperthorpe and Langsett areas of Sheffield, NUCA has developed from a small community forum into a successful community development trust.
  • It combines a resident led approach – all NUCA directors are local residents – with a strategic role at a local, regional and national level, underpinned by quality service delivery.
  • NUCA is lead partner for a £15 million regeneration scheme and is one of the few community managed accountable bodies in the UK.
  • NUCA is lead partner in an innovative £5 million Healthy Living Centre equipped for the 21st century and also delivers a wide range of projects including the Young People's Platform, the One Stop Shop for Employment and Training, the Streetsafe Wardens Scheme and many others.
  • A chance to look at three areas of Sheffield and key developments, experience the impressive Healthy Living Centre and meet the residents over tea.
50 delegates can be accommodated on this visit.  (Return to the top of this page)

Norfolk Park

  • In Norfolk Park, the City Council and local residents are working together, using bold, imaginative solutions, to meet one of the most difficult challenges of regeneration – how to turn a failing monolithic council estate of 3,000 dwellings into a place where people actively want to live.
  • The tour will look at the refurbished and new build housing; the new school; the extra care scheme for the elderly; recreational and retail facilities; the 'heart of the estate' and the green home affordable housing.
  • There will be a chance to meet and talk to residents over tea.
50 delegates have the chance to see Norfolk Park.  (Return to the top of this page)

The Sheffield and Tinsley Canal

  • Groundwork Sheffield will lead on this boat trip, looking at the industrial heritage and environmental value of the waterway, as well as recent regeneration work.
  • The trip will illustrate the challenges faced to regenerate and promote a potentially valuable asset for the city - both for visitors and local communities.
  • Groundwork will talk visitors through the projects that have been carried out on the Canal and other waterways in Sheffield, and discuss plans for the future.
  • The tour will start at Victoria Quays, close to the city centre, travel through one of Sheffield's historic industrial quarters, and out to Tinsley locks in the Don Valley, once home to Sheffield's steel industry and now a location for new leisure and sports venues.
  • The boat will then return to Victoria Quays.
  • The trip will take 1.5 hours
There is room for 48 delegates on this trip.  (Return to the top of this page)

Manor & Castle Development Trust

  • Now one of the UK's leading regeneration agencies, Manor and Castle Development Trust was formed in 1997 to deliver a regeneration programme to two disadvantaged wards in Sheffield.
  • The coach tour offers an opportunity to see some key housing developments, retail and business schemes as well as environmental, education and training projects and facilities for young people and health improvement.
  • All of these will demonstrate the approach Manor and Castle Development Trust has taken to regeneration over the last nine years - long term and sustainable.
Room for 50 delegates on this outing.  (Return to the top of this page)

Burngreave New Deal for Communities (BNDfC) Area

  • This visit takes in an ethnically diverse area one mile to the North East of Sheffield. Its proximity to the City centre means its success will contribute to the success of the city and vice-versa.
  • Delegates will view some of the changes in the area over the past five years, speak to key officers from the programme and hear about the groundbreaking, Advancing Together agreement with the local council and the challenge of making it sustainable.
  • There will be a performance from some of the local residents, visits to the community building, community and commercial spaces and leisure facilities, as well as to Greenfingers, a garden project providing therapy for people with mental health difficulties.
Maximum 30 delegates with wheelchair accessible coaches.  (Return to the top of this page)

Shirecliffe

  • The visit is to Shirecliffe, a regeneration area in to the north of the City, that is within the Housing Market Renewal Area.
  • Delegates will be able to see where Council housing has been demolished and the many projects are being delivered.
  • The projects that will be covered on the tour are Park improvements, an Extra Care development, a Sure Start Children's Centre, refurbishment of the Community Centre, Homesteading, Remodelling, a 'Vacants' pilot scheme and proposals for the new build housing.
30 delegates can attend this tour.  (Return to the top of this page)

Sheffield's New Public Spaces - City Centre Walking Tour

  • The city is in the midst of the most ambitious reshaping of its central public spaces since the 1950's, following the Sheffield 1 Masterplan of 2000.
  • Those which are already complete, such as the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden have won a fistful of awards and more importantly are overwhelmingly popular with local people and visitors.
  • They have become icons of the city's post -industrial renaissance.
  • The walk will start with an overview of the vision, which aims to express the inherent drama of Sheffield's natural setting and its character and history, before touring the city centre looking at work complete, in progress and projected.
  • The tour involves small inclines and some uneven road surfaces, but accessible by foot and wheelchair
35 delegates can attend this tour.  (Return to the top of this page)
