Visits to regeneration projects : Tuesday 13 July 2004 : 1.30pm


City Centre:

  • A walking tour around the centre of Manchester showing how the City has redefined itself following the IRA bomb in 1996.

  • The tour will include the new Spinningfields development, the Urbis museum and Exchange Square and the huge growth in residential developments as well as the rich heritage that characterises the City.

  • Led by Gordon McKinnon, City Centre Manager.

Housing Market Renewal Area:

  • Focussing on Rusholme and Moss Side in the South of the area the tour will show how areas of predominantly mixed tenure terraced housing have suffered as a result of the collapse of the housing market.

  • The tour will highlight the approach Manchester has developed in renewing such areas and will focus on the redevelopment of the Maine Road site, the former home of Manchester City FC.

  • If time permits the coach will return via the Northmoor Home Zone scheme which has won a number of awards for its innovative approach.

  • Led by Bernard Murtagh, Project Leader with Manchester Housing.

East Manchester - Sportcity And Strategic Sites:

  • The tour will look at some of the more strategic developments in the regeneration of East Manchester.

  • Focussing in particular on Sportcity, the centrepiece of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, with the City of Manchester Stadium, now the home of Manchester City FC, English Institute of Sport with the National Squash Centre, the Regional Athletics Arena, National Cycling Centre and a Tennis Centre.

  • The latest additions to the site will see the B of the Bang sculpture and a high quality resort casino development.

  • The tour will also take in Central Park, the country's largest Urban Business Park and Ancoats Urban Village.

  • Led by Jane Deane, Project Director, New East Manchester.

East Manchester - New Deal For Communities:

  • An alternative view of the regeneration of East Manchester, led by two residents who are actively involved in the regeneration of the area.

  • The tour will look at the progress to date in turning around the Beswick, Clayton and Openshaw areas of East Manchester, looking at new schools, refurbished parks and open spaces, new and improved housing.

  • The tour will also look at the remaining challenges for the NDC scheme.

  • Led by Steve Green and Marc Barnes, East Manchester Residents.
