Below is a list of current and recent policy and practice research by ROOM:
  • Delivering Affordable Housing in Rural Areas  -  a research project, with practice seminars, supported jointly by the Countryside Agency and the Housing Corporation to promote improved dialogue between key players in the delivery of affordable housing in rural areas.

  • Best Practice in Managing the Release of Housing Land in Northern Ireland  -  a practice seminar organised for the Regional Planning Division of the Department for Regional Development in Northern Ireland.

  • PPG3 Housing  -  Implementing the new policy guidance - a series of six regional seminars organised for the Department of Transport, Local Government and Regions (DTLR) to promote the delivery of PPG3 on the ground.

  • Applying the 'Good Enough' approach to development control - a practice-based research project supported by the Countryside Agency to explore the potential application by local planning authorities of a key principle from its recent policy statement Planning for tomorrow's countryside.

  • Positive Planning project  -  a major three-year programme supported by the DTLR to promote the concept and practice of positive planning, particularly in the provision of affordable housing and community regeneration (link).

  • The Role of RSLs in Regeneration  -  a forthcoming Housing Corporation bIGPicture report looking at the ways in which social housing and registered social landlords are becoming involved in all aspects of community regeneration.  Funded by the Housing Corporation through its I&GP grants programme.

  • Planning Control and Housing Tenure  -  a scoping paper for the Housing Corporation looking at the arguments for and against introducing a separate Use Class within planning regulation for social housing. Funded by the Housing Corporation through its I&GP grants programme.

  • How Regeneration Partnerships Learn from Each Other - a study of the ways in which SRB and other local regeneration partnerships acquire the skills needed for community regeneration. Funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

  • Skills for the new urban agenda  -  a report looking at the skills required to achieve urban regeneration.  Funded and published by the Centre for Education in the Built Environment at the Learning and Teaching Support Network and published in November 2001 as Defining the Educational and Training Needs for the New Urban Agenda.

  • Master planning processes and new communities  -  a report on current initiatives in master planning for urban growth.  Funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and published in November 2001 on the web as the introduction to Masterplanning a New Community at http://www.jrf.org.uk/housingtrust/newosbaldwick.

  • Speeding up the development process for housing in London - research looking at the reasons for delay in the development of market and affordable housing in London with recommendations for changes to systems and processes.  Jointly with the University of Westminster and London Residential Research.  Funded by the Greater London Assembly
