securing improvement and
excellence in planning practice
A major joint Conference organised by ROOM,
the National Council for Housing and Planning, in conjunction
with the Planning Officers' Society, with the support of the DTLR
The event
Positive planning is already being promoted in many areas, but not enough is known about good practice and how it can be delivered more widely. The Positive Planning Conference is based on themed workshops, lead by some of the country's foremost planning practitioners, providing considerable scope for debate and discussion of case studies and best practice principles. The Conference will help you explore the features of a positive approach to planning and how to secure continuous improvement in the way planning services can deliver real improvements in the quality of life.
If it is to promote beneficial change, planning practice should lead, not follow; enable, not stifle; initiate, not react; be interventionist, not passive; and be integrated with other social, economic and environmental programmes and policies. As the Planning Green Paper states: 'we need to use the planning system to set out a positive vision for the future development of our communities: seeing planning as a positive tool rather than merely a negative break on development.' The Positive Planning Conference hopes to mark a renaissance in planning practice.
Who should attend
The Conference is targeted at planning practitioners in the public, private and voluntary sectors, local authority members, developers, architects, community groups, and all who want to be at the cutting edge of planning practice.
